This chapter concludes the book by integrating theoretical, methodological, and empirical insights on digital transformation (DT) and artificial intelligence (AI) in organizations. It argues that, despite unprecedented technological progress, most DT initiatives fail to deliver sustained strategic impact because they are treated as technical upgrades rather than deep organizational metamorphoses. True transformation requires redefining value creation logics, reconfiguring structures, and aligning technological innovation with strategic intent. Building on classical organization theory and contemporary digital studies, this chapter reframes DT as a distributed, multi-level process shaped by contextual constraints, institutional inertia, and cognitive path dependencies. It highlights the need for participatory and reflexive approaches that integrate technological, human, and institutional dimensions. The discussion of AI underscores its dual nature: not only a driver of transformation when strategically embedded but also a potential source of rigidity when deployed narrowly for efficiency. While generative AI expands the cognitive frontier of automation, its limitations—opacity, dependency on historical data, and reduction of organizational learning diversity—require cautious governance and transparent implementation. This chapter concludes that AI and DT must be viewed as co-evolving forces that reshape organizational cores, redefine competitive advantages, and reconfigure entire industries. Future research should adopt longitudinal and multi-method perspectives to capture the emergent and distributed nature of transformation, bridging technological evolution with sociotechnical adaptation. Ultimately, sustainable DT is not achieved by adopting technologies per se but by cultivating digital mindsets, institutional flexibility, and strategic foresight capable of navigating ongoing technological change.
