Voice output technology has attained levels of surprising sophistication and quality at reasonable costs. Examined in this article are two methods of generating synthetic speech: phoneme and reconstructed voice systems. Applications, on both levels, are discussed. Accompanying the article are a glossary, directory, list of sources for further reading, as well as an introduction to IOCS, a leader in voice output systems.
