Purpose

This study maps the intellectual structure, research trajectories, and emerging priorities of learning analytics (LA) research from 2015 to 2024. It addresses limitations in prior bibliometric reviews by incorporating post-2021 developments related to artificial intelligence (AI), ethics, and governance, and by examining how these shifts reshape research themes and collaboration patterns. The study also aims to translate bibliometric evidence into insights relevant for research, practice, and policy.

Design/methodology/approach

A bibliometric and visualization analysis was conducted using CiteSpace. A total of 604 peer-reviewed research articles retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (2015–2024) were analyzed after excluding non-research items. The analysis included publication trend analysis, country, institution, and author collaboration networks, document co-citation analysis, and keyword co-occurrence analysis. One-year time slicing, Top-N node selection, and Pathfinder pruning were applied to reveal structural dynamics and thematic evolution.

Findings

Results show that LA research output increased steadily until peaking in 2021, followed by a period of relative stabilization. The field is geographically concentrated, with Australia—particularly Monash University—and the United States occupying central positions in publication output and collaboration networks. Core research hotspots include academic performance prediction, artificial intelligence, precision education, and educational data, while learning analytics dashboards remain a persistent theme. Computers & Education and Education and Information Technologies emerge as the most influential journals.

Originality/value

This study provides an updated visualization of LA research by capturing post-2021 shifts related to AI and ethics. It advances prior bibliometric work by integrating collaboration structures, intellectual foundations, and thematic evolution within a single framework, and by highlighting issues of equity and responsible analytics. The findings offer actionable insights for researchers, institutions, and policymakers supporting sustainable LA development.
