The UK waste and resources research community is made up of various university departments, government departments, NGO's, consultants and research organisations. However until recently there has been very little joined up thinking and coordinated action within this community. The research which has been carried out has often suffered from duplication and a lack of integration. Strategic and integrated R&D activity has been the distant dream of a few visionaries. However the last few years has seen a growing realization by much of the waste sector that this approach must be challenged and that there must be a new dawn in the way that waste research is identified, carried out and disseminated. There has been the emergence of UK forums which have and are attempting to facilitate this change. Such forums include the National Resource and Waste Forum (NRWF) and the Forum for Waste and Resources Research and Development (FORWARRD). While the new dawn of integration, coordination and focus may not have arrived yet, the dawn chorus might be about to start singing.
