It has also spread to many other parts of the world. Sovereign citizens are a subculture of anti-government extremists who falsely believe their interpretation of society’s laws supersedes all others. They deny the legitimacy of existing governments and all of their laws. Sovereign citizens flood the courts with invalid, senseless paperwork. Their actions have resulted in the deaths of civilians, police officers, and government officials. They issue death threats. They dox judges, the families of judges, and other employees of the court. The Biden White House identified anti-government groups as being one of the “most lethal elements of today’s domestic terrorism threat” (The White House, 2021, para. 4).
