Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic forced many higher education institutions worldwide to shift from face-to-face to online learning, highlighting the importance of effective student–instructor relationships in this context. This book chapter comprehensively examines the student–instructor relationships in online learning environments in higher education. It identifies five key topics, including trust, affection, support, rapport, and social presence, and discusses how this relationship affects students’ engagement, academic performance, and well-being. The chapter explores the instructor-related, student-related, and technological factors that influence the student–instructor relationships in online learning. Practical recommendations are proposed for instructors, administrators, and policymakers to improve this relationship. Overall, this book chapter provides valuable insights into how to establish effective student–instructor relationships in online learning environments and promote student success and well-being in higher education.
