This chapter elucidates what it means to be a sovereign citizen, explaining the basic premise of what a sovereign citizen is, the nature of their beliefs, exploring their evolution, their current status, and why some individuals have a distaste for being labeled a sovereign citizen. Also included are updates on the status of the movement. The pandemic likely spurred the latest resurgence of the movement. Public health measures caused a pushback among some individuals, some of whom adopted sovereign citizen tactics as part of their resistance (Hobbs et al., 2025).
