Linking Theory and Practice in Learning Environments
The early part of the 21st Century has witnessed a heightened interest in the physical learning environments of educational institutions. Around the world educational institutions-from schools to post-secondary institutions-are spending billions of dollars in the design and build of learning environments that are equipped with innovative design elements. Such innovative designs changes are not only driven by the transformative power of technological developments but also by current developments in pedagogical and design theories.
Current research investigating the relationship between the design of learning environments and `on the ground´ experiences in schools and educational institutions indicate that educators are paying more attention to the iterative design and construction of their learning spaces than ever before. As well educators are consciously implementing innovative teaching and learning practices that are commensurate to the design of these spaces. However the link between theory and practice in learning environments are still under-developed particularly as it relates to developing students and graduates who will be ready skilled and able to live and contribute into the future.
This innovative series closes the gap between the theory and practice of learning environments by bringing together new research focused on the various aspects of learning environments defined as the physical pedagogical and psychosocial contexts in which learning occurs. We invite proposals from scholars in education and architecture as well as across K-12 and post-secondary sectors for books that will help illuminate the field. These monographs will link more closely the theoretical and practical implications of learning environments in order to bring about sustainable improvements in student learning and outcomes.
