Law and Management of Family Firms

Law and management are two disciplines that have mutually benefited each other. Established examples of this are law and economics and corporate governance.

In comparison research on family businesses is still at an earlier stage of development. This is true for management where family businesses were not considered a separate field for a long time. This is even more true for law not least because family business is not a legal form in its own right and is therefore difficult to integrate into the systematics of jurisprudence. Given this starting point it is hardly surprising that interdisciplinary research on family businesses by law and management is still in its infancy.

This is where the book series wants to start. It seeks to overcome the boundaries of the two disciplines but also national and cultural boundaries through internationality. In this way the book series becomes a forum that contributes to improving our understanding of family businesses the predominant form of business in market economies worldwide. The core of the book series is the annual Hamburg Conference: Law and Management of Family Firms. This conference is organized by the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law Hamburg and the Institute for Mittelstand and Family Firms (HSBA Hamburg School of Business Administration) Hamburg. Each conference is devoted to a specific topic relating to law and management of family firms and provides a forum for a cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas and views among academic researchers in that field.
