The 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey conducted by the National Center for Transgender Equality found that 40% of transgender respondents in the United States have attempted suicide (James et al., 2016). In response to high rates of suicide, transgender activists are creating resources such as hotlines and social support groups. Using ethnographic methods that combine sociocultural and biological factors of stress, depression, and suicidal ideation, this chapter explores a transgender led social support group in Louisiana in order to better understand possible resilience strategies against depression and suicidal ideation for transgender communities.
