John is an Associate Professor Emeritus, Instructional Development Consultant, Office of Learning and Evaluation Services, Michigan State University(MSU). He began his work as a Campus Minister, 1948–68, served as the Director of the MSU-Rust College Student Tutorial Education Project in Holly Springs, Mississippi, 1965–68, Assistant Professor, Director of Off-Campus Cross-Cultural Learning Program, Justin Morrill College, MSU, 1968-76. He was a member of the Founding Conference of the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE) 1971.

Since retiring from the University in 1982 he has been a Community Organizer, founding the Greater Lansing Housing Coalition 1989, the Closing the Digital Gap Program 2001, and serving as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Edgewood Village Non-Profit Housing Corporation and its Community Outreach Program since 1995. Not bad work for someone born in 1922.
